Alumni Video Series – Every Youth Hockey Player Journey is Unique

Every youth hockey player has a “story”. The Philadelphia Flyers Elite Youth Hockey Club has had the opportunity and tremendous benefit of being home to thousands of youth hockey players over the years. Some players may have only played in our program for a short while, but many of them spent six to ten years with us. Almost all of our alumni have gone on to play NCAA Division I, III and ACHA hockey, and quite a few have been fortunate to have their efforts and dreams rewarded with a professional contract. Most importantly, we believe that along the way our coaches and our culture played a role in the overall development of the person, helping to prepare them for success in all aspects of their life.

Through this process, each player has experienced their own journey. Challenges; successes; adversity; great times; tragic times; true friendships; impactful learning experiences. The path can be a long and winding road, with plenty of twists, turns and roadblocks. Most importantly to note – each player’s path is unique, and wholly their own. Our new video series is intended to provide you with insights into some of those journeys.

MIKEY COLELLA

Not all roads are easily traveled. Every player will face adversity if they stick it out long enough, but the key is how you handle that adversity that sets you apart. This video chat provides an inside look on how Mike Colella handled his adversity in order to earn an opportunity to spend his next four years attending Northern Michigan University and playing hockey.

Some highlighted parts of this fascinating interview include:

3:15 – The benefit of playing multiple sports

5:30 – Mikey’s youth hockey journey

10:45 – Adversity hits – transitioning from Tier I to Tier II

16:00 – Being on a team

21:00 – The Junior Hockey path, including playing in five different cities within five weeks and earning a commitment along the way

33:30 – Pushing through adversity and committing to NMU

43:00 – Advice to the next generation of youth players

MAX KOUZNETSOV

Committing to one club during his entire ten-year youth hockey career is how Max Kouznetsov spent his time preparing to play Division I hockey at Canisius College. In this interview, Max explains how surrounding yourself with good coaches and teammates is more important than jumping from team to team during your youth career. What he learned during his time as a young player prepared him on how to handle the difficulties that would eventually come at the junior level. Max was selected in the USHL Draft, Tendered in the NAHL, played in the USPHL, and was later drafted in the NAHL by Johnstown where he had a terrific season and earned a commitment to play at Canisius. Max’s path was his own, filled with trials & tribulations and plenty of learning experiences along the way. We hope you enjoy his story……

Some highlighted parts of this fascinating interview include:

2:45 – Transfer from Tier II to Tier I

6:30 – Grasping the importance & benefits of off-ice training

33:00 – Max’s advice, including to be patient and trust the process

VINNY BORGESI

Overcoming the stereotype that you need to be over 6’0” to be an impact defenseman. This is what Vinny Borgesi has done over his young career. As an ‘04 who spent his first six seasons playing up, Vinny made the decision to join his age group in order to better develop his game. Two seasons later he will be competing to play in the USHL for the Tri-City Storm. Vinny has experienced a ton of success in his young career, but his journey has also provided several disappointments and challenges that only proved to motivate him even further. Listen in to see what Vinny feels contributes to his success.

Some highlighted parts of this fascinating interview include:
